Pickleball for everyone

What is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a rapidly growing and exciting racquet sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It is played with a solid paddle and a perforated plastic ball on a modified tennis court, making it accessible and enjoyable for people of all ages and skill levels. The game was created in the mid-1960s and has since gained popularity worldwide due to its easy-to-learn rules, fast-paced action, and social nature.

The sport is typically played in doubles format, with two teams of two players each, although singles play is also common. The court is divided into four areas—two serving zones and two non-volley zones, also known as the “kitchen.”

Pickleball offers a mix of strategic play, agility, and hand-eye coordination. It requires players to adapt their skills and employ tactics such as dinking (a soft drop shot), power shots, and volleys. The sport’s versatility allows players to tailor their style of play to their preferences, whether they enjoy aggressive net play or a more defensive approach.

One of the reasons for pickleball’s growing popularity is its accessibility. The game’s smaller court size and slower-paced ball make it easier on the joints compared to other racquet sports, reducing the risk of injuries. Additionally, the paddle’s larger surface area provides a greater margin of error, making it less daunting for beginners.

Pickleball’s community spirit is another appealing aspect of the sport. It promotes social interaction, as it is often played in recreational centres, parks, and community venues. It fosters a friendly and welcoming atmosphere where players of all ages and skill levels can participate together, forging new friendships and enjoying the camaraderie that comes with the game.

Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or new to racquet sports, pickleball offers a thrilling and enjoyable experience. Its combination of skill, strategy, and social engagement has captivated players around the world. So grab a paddle, find a partner, and get ready to experience the fast-paced action and addictive fun of pickleball.

Beware…once you start you’ll be hooked. Combining aspects of badminton, ping pong and tennis with a smattering of squash it’s the easiest of racquet sports to pick up and enjoy. All the organising done for you; sessions every day, courts booked, equipment provided, friendly players of all standards. Oh, and Vijay’s ability to compliment a good shot or correct an error from 3 courts away is unparalleled. Don’t hesitate to join the fun, you won’t regret it.

Birdie Tallon

I have found Charlbury Pickleball club to be a very welcoming and friendly place in which to both play this addictive and fun sport and to meet and chat to a good range of people. Everything runs smoothly thanks to Vijay, who arranges the players onto court for each game; this ensures balance and that new players are easily integrated. Vijay also offers coaching and advice- with plenty of humour thrown in. I recommend to everyone to have a go at playing pickleball!

“A great sport and a great place to play, sessions to suit everyone throughout the week, very friendly group with a lovely cafe for coffee and cake afterwards “

Dave Court

“Why pickleball rather than the games that are known and established?

Because pickleball is more energetic than table tennis, less fiddly than badminton and much easier than tennis.”

Rupert Timpson

“Friendly, well-run club. Players of any level are welcomed. Paddles available to borrow during the session. Café on site provides a relaxing area for post-game socialising.”

Sybil Barton

“A really excellent facility that has taken the time to keep all of its resources in tip top condition. The sports hall is a fantastic clean, bright space that is clearly cared for on a very regular basis. Great Pickleball Club with sessions every weekday.”

Stephen

“Pickleball is a game most people can play and most certainly enjoy, and the Oxford Pickleball Club brings together a great set of people of all ages that puts a smile on your face. Come and give it a try 😊. “

Bob London

“Exactly as it says on the website! Good fun 🤩 …”

Jane Crawford

“Terrific group of players of this relatively new game. Lots of differing skill levels but we all play together and it gives us a chance to play with some far better than ourselves, and thus to learn. We also have the chance to stay afterwards at the adjoining cafe/coffee shop and socialise. The club’s founder is a great player (too good for some of us) but is also a great coach and teacher throughout our sessions and tries to keep us improving all the time..”

Andrew Greenfield

“Charlbury pickleball is a thoroughly inclusive club with ages ranging from 10-80 + yrs. All ranges of fitness and athleticism are catered for, and members are tolerant & good humoured. The club is well organised by it’s founder, who adds quirkiness, and generosity to the proceedings. Coffee in the welcoming cafe afterwards is a great way to get to know each other better.”

Marion Greenfield

Great venue, very well organised play for all levels and played on excellent courts. Very social game and very addictive.
